ChatGPT vs. a specialized AI agent: which one does your company need?

· 8 min read · SISCON Blog

"We already use ChatGPT, why would we invest in a specialized agent?" — it's the question we get most often. The honest answer: it depends on what you need. Here's the comparison without marketing.

What ChatGPT does well

It's an extraordinary tool for general tasks: drafting emails, summarizing public articles, writing code with common patterns, brainstorming, basic translations. For the majority of an individual's daily tasks, an Enterprise license at around $60 USD/user/month gives you 80% of the value with zero implementation effort.

What ChatGPT can't do

It doesn't know your internal documents. It can't tell you "based on the Vendor Manual rev. 7, the process is...". It doesn't connect with your CRM, ERP or ticketing system to take real actions. It doesn't have memory between sessions of what your team decided last month. And critically: anything specific to your company, it makes up — convincingly, but it makes it up.

What a specialized agent is

It's a system built for a specific use case in your company. It has access to your documents (RAG over your knowledge base), it integrates with your real systems (it opens a ticket, it updates a record), it's instrumented to measure quality (evals, observability) and it follows your business rules. It's not a "smarter ChatGPT" — it's a different category of tool.

When does each one make sense?

ChatGPT (or Claude/Copilot): when the value comes from individual productivity gains and the tasks are general. License model, fast deployment, low risk. A specialized agent: when the value comes from a specific business process, the questions involve internal information and the answer needs to be auditable and traceable. Higher initial investment, demonstrable ROI on a defined process.

How much does each one cost?

ChatGPT Enterprise: roughly $60 USD/user/month. A specialized agent: between $50K and $250K MXN initial development depending on complexity, plus optional monthly maintenance ($15-30K MXN). The comparison isn't fair because they're different things — it's like comparing Office 365 with a custom-built ERP.

The right question

It's not "ChatGPT or specialized agent". It's "which problem are we solving?". For diffuse productivity, ChatGPT-type licenses. For specific high-impact processes, a specialized agent. Many of our clients use both — for different things. If you're not sure which one fits your case, our AI Strategy Consulting exists for exactly this conversation.
