Everyone's talking about "AI agents" in 2026, but the term is used in so many ways that it's hard to tell marketing from reality. In this article we clarify what it is, what it isn't and why it matters for your company.
An agent is not a chatbot
A chatbot answers questions with pre-trained responses or generic LLM replies. An AI agent has three properties that set it apart:
- It knows your context — it accesses your documents, manuals, policies and internal data via RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation).
- It reasons before acting — it breaks down complex problems into steps, validates its own conclusions and asks for clarification when there's ambiguity.
- It executes actions — it doesn't just inform, it also opens tickets, queries APIs, updates databases or escalates to a human.
The anatomy of an enterprise agent
Behind every reliable agent there are four layers: the model (LLM), the scaffolding (system prompts + tools), the context engineering (how documents are passed to it) and the harness (evals, observability, guardrails). Without all four, the agent may work in a demo but fail in production.
How is it different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT and similar tools are generalists: they know a little about everything. An enterprise agent knows a lot about your company. The difference is obvious when you ask "what's the refund procedure for premium customers?": ChatGPT makes things up, the agent quotes the exact document.
Cases where it's worth investing
Technical support with extensive documentation, new-employee onboarding, internal consulting on policies, tender or RFP analysis, technical pre-sales and knowledge management. If your team answers the same questions over and over again with information that already exists in writing, there's an AI agent waiting to help.
